Before you add more marketing, get clear on what comes next

Last Update: October 22, 2026

As the end of the year approaches, it is easy to feel you should be doing more marketing.

One more campaign. More social posts. An offer to bring in business before Christmas.

For some businesses, a focused push makes sense. For others, the most useful thing to do before the year ends is to step back and ask:

Are we clear about what our marketing needs to achieve and where we should focus next?

October is a good time to have that conversation. There is still time to act on worthwhile opportunities this year, while making decisions that will help you start 2027 with direction.

The aim is to make the next few months count.

  1. Start with what your business needs

“More marketing” is an activity. What you need is a business outcome.

Perhaps you want more enquiries from customers who are a good fit. Perhaps you need to build demand for a particular service, reconnect with existing customers or strengthen your pipeline for next year.

Each of those priorities calls for a different response.

Before deciding what to post, promote or spend, ask:

  • What work or sales do we most want to attract?
  • Which customers are the best fit for our business?
  • When do those customers make their buying decisions?
  • What can we realistically deliver with the time, budget and capacity available?

A business with a long sales process may need to start conversations now that lead to work in 2027. A business with seasonal demand may have a more immediate opportunity.

Your marketing should reflect how your customers buy and what your business needs.

  1. Review what has earned its place

Before adding anything new, look at what you have already been doing.

Which activities have generated suitable enquiries? Where have your best customers come from? What has helped people understand your value and feel confident about choosing you?

Look beyond the most visible numbers. More website visitors can be encouraging, but are they reaching the right pages and taking the next step? More enquiries are useful, but how many lead to the kind of work you want?

You may also find activities that have been too inconsistent to assess fairly. A handful of social posts or an occasional email tells you little about what a sustained approach could achieve.

  1. Keep what is working. Assess what is unclear. Change what the evidence suggests needs to change.

Be careful about replacing something simply because it feels familiar to you. Your customers do not see your marketing as often as you do.

  1. Find the gap that is holding you back

When marketing feels disappointing, the instinct is often to increase visibility. Sometimes that is exactly what is needed. But visibility is only part of the picture.

Think about the journey your customers take:

Find you. Can the right people discover your business when they need what you offer?

Like you. Does your communication feel relevant and show that you understand them?

Trust you. Can they see evidence of your experience, capability and results?

Choose you. Is it clear why your business is a good fit and how to take the next step?

Refer or recommend you. Do customers have a good experience and a clear understanding of who else you can help?

You do not need to improve everything at once. You need to identify where the most important gap sits.

If people visit your website but struggle to understand your services, more traffic may leave the same problem unresolved. If customers love your work but few people know you exist, visibility may deserve more attention.

The right next move depends on the gap that is holding you back.

  1. Choose a manageable focus for the rest of 2026

Once you know the priority, choose a small number of actions you can follow through on. That might mean improving a key service page, publishing a case study that answers buyers’ concerns or reconnecting with past customers through a useful email.

For another business, it could mean refining an advertising campaign or putting a consistent follow-up process in place.

Choose actions that support the same outcome. Give each one an owner, a timeframe and a way to judge progress.

Also consider timing. What can reasonably influence results before the end of the year? What needs to begin now to support demand later.

This helps you set realistic expectations and use your budget with purpose.

Make the important decisions for 2027 now

You do not need every detail of next year’s marketing settled before Christmas. But you can make the decisions that will give your planning a stronger foundation:

  • The customers and services you will prioritise.
  • The value you need to communicate more clearly.
  • The activities you will sustain consistently.
  • The budget and people needed to deliver them.
  • The results you will use to assess progress.

Those decisions make it easier to build a practical plan. They also reduce the chance of starting January with good intentions but with the same unanswered questions.
